Exploring a Ballardian non-place

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

“Ballardian- resembling or suggestive of the conditions described in J. G. Ballard’s novels and stories, especially dystopian modernity, bleak man-made landscapes and the psychological effects of technological, social or environmental developments.”

Recently faced with spending hours by myself in a Premier Inn hotel room at Heathrow airport, I went out and explored the surrounding area.

J G Ballard-Zodiac 3000

Sunday, August 24th, 2008

I became a fan of the writer J.G. Ballard last year when I read ‘High Rise’. I was fairly blown away by this short, punchy novel, and was struck by its juxtaposition of modern aspirational living and hedonistic barbarism. Since then Ive devoured almost everything my local library has to offer by him.

I think I’d class Ballard as one of my influences. His themes and preoccupations certainly seem to resonate with my own concerns.

Earlier this year, a Ballard themed art show, ‘Zodiac 3000′ was held in the Bournville village in Birmingham, UK. The following is a little photo record of my visit to the show on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in May.

This was originally published on an earlier blog I had over at blogspot. That didn’t work out very well, for some reason my traffic and Google hits were virtually non-existent. So it appears here for you now.
